Learn IT Online with OIT Training - Lynda.com Online Training Pilot

Duke’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) is making it even easier to learn the latest technological tools anytime, anywhere.  Duke users can now participate in the Lynda.com online training pilot by connecting to the tutorials from Duke or home using the Duke NetID authentication system. The new system will allow 30 users to access the tutorials at one time, with a limited number of dedicated user accounts also available for individual faculty and trainers. Training topics include Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, video editing, computer programming, Web design, and database design. The Lynda.com pilot runs through June 2010. The student organization information session scheduled for this Thursday, November 5th has been moved from the Schiciano Auditorium in CIEMAS to 203 Teer building due to a course exam that will be held in CIEMAS.

Duke Arts Weekend

Duke Arts Weekend
November 6 – 7, 2009

All students are invited to join in the first ever Duke Arts Weekend!  The weekend will include an opportunity to meet and network with alumni who contribute to the arts in a variety of ways from independently creating to supporting the business of the arts or arts-related legal issues.  An art exhibition will be located at the Bryan Center from 2:00 p.m. on Friday through Saturday evening.  Various student performances will also be featured throughout the weekend.

Twenty-five alumni are returning to campus to represent the TV/Film, Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Music Industries!

The weekend will kick-off with a dinner and networking reception with alumni panelists and students at the LSRC Dining Hall.  Registration is required.  All students are invited to register for this dinner and networking reception.

Industry specific panels will take place on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. and 3:15 – 4:45 p.m.  Following the panels, all students and alumni are invited to attend a networking reception from 4:45 – 6:00 p.m. where the students will have an opportunity to speak with alumni after hearing them speak on their panel.

The Nature Conservancy Diversity Internship Program

The Diversity Internship Program is designed to help The Nature Conservancy (TNC) attract individuals from a variety of socio-cultural experiences. The goal is for each intern to have a high- quality experience, a committed mentor, and a relevant project that provides them with additional skills and training. TNC will be hiring students to fill OVER 40 PAID INTERNSHIP positions during summer, 2010.

Fannie Mitchell Expert in Residence Series: Catalyzing a Non-Traditional Career Path

A background in polymer chemistry can serve as a stepping stone into a variety of roles in industry.  This talk will discuss our upcoming Fannie Mitchell Expert in Residence Jennifer Petoff’s evolution from a PhD in polymer chemistry and a career at the bench to a role as a technical trainer at Google.  Specific emphasis will be placed on volunteer opportunities and the key role of a strong professional network in breaking into a new area.

From Double Major to Google’s DoubleClick Division: Embracing Unexpected Opportunities

When Jennifer Petoff graduated from the University of Rochester with a double degree in Chemistry and Psychology, she had no inkling that she would one day be training publishers to use online ad serving tools.  A graduate degree in the sciences combined with a variety of volunteer experiences led her down a non-traditional path.  This talk will discuss the author’s evolution from a PhD in polymer chemistry and a career at the lab bench to a role as a technical trainer at Google.  The importance of volunteer opportunities, a focus on transferable skills, and a broad professional network to break into a new career area will be emphasized.

We want you….to help identify a speaker for your Commencement ceremony.
The Office of the University Secretary seeks your nominations for a distinguished speaker to address Duke graduates and their families in May, 2011.  All ideas are welcome and appreciated.
We are also looking for volunteers to serve on an advisory committee to review and comment on possible speakers.

Hart Fellows Program Information Session

Are you currently in your last year as an undergraduate at Duke? Are you interested in working and living in a developing country? Do you want to combine academic research with service to a community organization?

If the answer to any of those questions is “Yes!” then consider applying to become a Hart Fellow!

The Hart Fellows Program, which is part of the Hart Leadership Program and is based out of the Sanford School of Public Policy, offers recent Duke graduates the opportunity to spend 10 months working with organizations around the world that are facing complex social, political and humanitarian problems.
