This year’s theme, “Making Connections,” focuses on how to make the critical connections necessary to become a leader. Broad topics to be covered include connecting to yourself, connecting with others, and connecting to the community.

1. The Financial Crisis: What Happened, and What’s Next?
Posted by: Michael Schoenfeld (michael.schoenfeld@duke.edu)

All members of the Duke community are invited to the first President’s Forum on Critical Issues on Wednesday, October 1, at 3:30 p.m. in the Bryan Center’s Griffith Theater. (A simulcast will be available in Page Auditorium in case of overflow.) As the most tumultuous financial upheaval of recent memory continues to unfold, how much do we really know about the causes of this crisis, and the impact of the various solutions? Come join President Richard H. Brodhead and five distinguished members of the Duke faculty for a wide-ranging conversation that can help us understand the issues and bring some sense to a very chaotic situation

Faculty panelists will be Professor of Economics Craig Burnside, Brainerd Currie Professor of Law James D. Cox, J. Paul Sticht Professor of International Business Cam Harvey, Ernestine Friedl Professor of Political Science David Rohde, and Thomas F. Keller Professor of Accounting Katherine Schipper, with President Brodhead moderating the discussion. An opportunity for questions and answers will follow.

This program is open to all Duke students, faculty and staff.

Posted by: Priyanka Chaurasia (pc45@duke.edu)

THE ME TOO MONOLOGUES:
“Got a personal story about race or culture?
Let’s hear it.

From the folks who brought you the “me, too” blog, get ready for the “me, too monologues show” during MLK 2009. Concentrating on true stories about race, ethnicity, and culture, the show draws on (anonymous) narratives of Duke students to be acted out by an all-Duke cast.

GET INVOLVED!

Send in your stories! Funny, sad, short, long, happy, poem, rap, spoken word. We want it all!

Send all questions and submissions to Priyanka at pc45@duke.edu
Deadline for consideration is October 1st.

9. School Days
Posted by: Stacey Craig (Stacey.craig@duke.edu)

Calling all Duke Students: Free lunch and Free t-shirt!!

You get even more than this for taking two hours to participate in School Days—you will also get the satisfaction of helping steer 8th graders to aim for college. These students are selected by their teachers and counselors because they don’t have any family members who have gone to college.

We would like you, paired with another Duke student and a staff member, to meet and walk with a group of ten 8th graders visiting from Durham middle schools. Please link to us at http://survey.oit.duke.edu/ViewsFlash/servlet/viewsflash?cmd=showform&pollid=sdays!students and let us know you can help out on Thursday morning, October 23 at either 9:45am (preferred) or 11:00am.

We know you will also look good in this outstanding shirt!

For more information, please contact Stacey Craig at 668.1033 or Stacey.craig@duke.edu.
