BSA presents…Owning Duke: Race, Residence, and Resources

posted on November 20th, 2008 by

We are often told to take ownership of our Duke experience. At this meeting, we will discuss what this actually means and how we are currently carrying this out. We will participate in small group discussions about engaging in the University and its resources. Your ideas will help guide BSA’s work in order to make Duke a better place for you.

Please join the Prospective Health Care Club on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 4:30-6:00 p.m. in Schiciano Auditorium, CIEMAS for our 4th Annual Prospective Health Care Conference:

“Prospective Health Care and the Individual”

Hosted by the Duke University Prospective Health Care Club

Health care in the U.S. is largely disease-oriented, reactive and sporadic. Consequently, preventable chronic conditions are responsible each year for the majority of mortality, morbidity and costs.

Prospective Health Care (PHC) attempts to address these flaws of our current health care system by focusing on health promotion and disease prevention through increased patient responsibility and strategic health planning, which is based on personal health plans. Evolving advancements in genomics as well as other fields are helping to enhance the shift towards prospective medicine.

The Duke University Prospective Health Care Club invites you to its 4th Annual Prospective Health Care Conference on Wednesday, November 19, 4:30-6 pm, in Schiciano Auditorium (CIEMAS). The theme of the conference is “Prospective Health Care and the Individual.” This year’s conference will focus on the individualistic mechanisms that PHC incorporates.

We are excited to announce that Dr. Ralph Snyderman, Chancellor Emeritus, Duke University will be our keynote speaker. Joining him will be Dr. Howard McLeod, Director of the UNC Institute for Pharmacogenomics and Individualized Therapy, and Mr. Mark Mead of the Carolina Center for Integrative Medicine.

Health care is an issue that impacts all of us. Come discover how you can make a difference in modern medicine’s revolution.

4. DUU Presents: Movin’ Out

Posted by: Janicanne Shane (janicanne.shane@duke.edu)

DUU LiveEnt Presents:

Wednesday, November 19th,

Musical: “Movin’ Out”

 8 p.m. Page Auditorium

$55, $45, $35 reserved seating

$25, $20, $15 Duke students and employees

MOVIN’ OUT, the Tony Award-winning new musical conceived, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp and based on 24 classic songs by Billy Joel, opens in Durham at Page Auditorium on November 19th, 2008. This engagement of MOVIN’ OUT will mark the Durham premiere of the show that critics say revolutionized musical theatre as we know it.  “So exhilarating and soul-stirring, it practically bursts out of the theatre,” said Time Magazine. “Movin’ Out is electrifying! The union of Tharp and Joel is one made in heaven,” raved the Chicago Tribune.

Told through the choreography of Twyla Tharp and more than two dozen of Billy Joel’s songs, MOVIN’ OUT is the story of lifelong friends through two turbulent decades that change them and the world around them forever. Songs like “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and “Pressure” all come together to weave a musical backdrop which beautifully complements Tharp’s innovative choreography. The songs and dance take audiences through a poignant narrative comprised of three main elements: post-World War II idealism, the Vietnam War and its subsequent unrest, and finally, survival.

Many will recognize MOVIN’ OUT’s main characters, as they come straight from Joel’s lyrics. There’s Brenda and Eddie from “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” Tony and Sergeant O’Leary from “Movin’ Out,” Judy from “Why, Judy, Why,” and James from “James”—and their story is told completely through dance, with no dialogue whatsoever. MOVIN’ OUT is “a story told without language,” Tharp says. “The movement and the action tell the story—the experience, the emotional resonance, comes from action rather than language.”
