Copyright Resources
We occasionally hear questions regarding copyright issues at the ITS office. The frequency of these inquiries has increased over the last few months. I see two reasons for this. First, there is more awareness of the issue - that’s a good thing. Second, the issue is more confusing than ever - not such a good thing.
There are some resources available to you that can help you make the right decisions regarding copyright issues. At Duke, the Scholarly Communications Office publishes a blog, Scholarly Communications @ Duke, where current issues are discussed. Other resources from the Scholarly Communications Office include an FAQ page as well as the University Policy on Copyright and Electronic Course Content.
Duke is also home to the Center for the Study of the Public Domain. One of their most popular resources is their comic book, Tales from the Public Domain: Bound by Law? that can be downloaded from their comics page.
The American University Ceneter for Social Media is also a good source of information on copyright and fair use issues. This video is an introduction to the issues surrounding remixes, mashups and other uses of copyrighted media.
Finally, I have a much longer video for anyone interested in the remix culture. The video, Good Copy Bad Copy, features Girl Talk, who recently performed at our own Last Day of Classes concert. (To view this at full size, visit Good Copy Bad Copy)
